We have found that this 4-foot box with 2-foot sides really keeps our outdoor horses happy. They have continual access to hay but a grate sits on top of the hay to slow down their consumption and keep them from tossing the hay out of the box. This keeps them from becoming overweight while also eliminating the hay loss that comes with feeding large bales. Three horses can feed on the bale at one time or take turns. Once they realize there is always hay around they become less aggressive and more relaxed.
We fill the box up every couple of days by breaking apart large one-ton bales. The box can also hold 3 small bales, approximately 175 pounds.
The steel framing sets on top of a poly-pallet that holds up well in wet conditions and allows drainage. The finished box is painted. The hay remains fairly close to the ground and the horses are able to eat with proper alignment of the head and neck (unlike many slow-feeder systems using hay nets).
If you are looking for a way to keep your horses happy and save on hay expenses, you might want to build or buy a slow-feeder hay box for yourself.
Boxes are available for pick up in central Denver. They are $395 painted.
